Communications: Twitter in an Emergency
Posted December 1st, 2008 by JimBensonUsing Twitter you can send short, focused pieces of information to a group of people instantly.
Does that sound useful in an emergency?
In recent disasters, Twitter has quickly proven to be a key communications conduit for both personal accounts of the disaster and official news. Why?
Wanchai Earthquake Earth Movement Slide Deck
Posted November 30th, 2008 by JimBensonDave Petley at Dave's Landslide Blog has a great slidedeck discussing the Wanchai earthquake earlier in 2008. Which building types performed well, which did not. How did rescue operations compare to previous earthquakes. What lessons can be taken away.
As always, excellent work by Dr. Petley.
What I learned at IAEM

Depiction Roll Out at IAEM Conference
Posted November 20th, 2008 by CAPT KimJust returned from the International Assn of Emergency Managers Conference in Kansas City where Depiction Version 1.0 was rolled out and unveiled to the public. Our booth was awesome (watch for the pics on our website soon), and so was the response to Depiction software. Everyone who invested a few minutes to see just some of what Depiction can do was impressed - and when they found out it costs only $89, they were VERY impressed. Many folks signed up on the spot to download the two week Free Trial version. The best part of the conference was the chance to

Moving Depiction Elements to ArcGIS
Posted November 12th, 2008 by levonI have received a number of questions from users regarding using Depiction in conjunction with their in-house GIS resources. Most users know that Depiction can directly import shapefiles which makes accessing your GIS data quick and easy. However, what many users do not know is that you can also move your Depiction elements back into ArcGIS. The mechanism for doing this is a .GML file.
Welcome to Depiction
Posted October 29th, 2008 by CAPT KimWelcome to Depiction and Captain Kim's blog.
After 27+ years in the U.S. Navy (now a retired Navy Captain) and 4 years with a local government organization, I joined the Depiction, Inc. team in March 2007 to help people everywhere (especially those with limited financial resources) be more effective in the important areas of emergency preparedness, contingency planning and crisis response.
Introduction
Posted October 29th, 2008 by levonHello All,
I just wanted to give a quick introduction since I am new to the Depiction Team. I have worked as a GIS professional in the Pacific Northwest for the last 16 years including time with the University of Washington, Snohomish County Surface Water Management, and my own GIS consulting firm TerraLogic GIS. In addition, I work part time as an Assistant Chief for the Stanwood Camano Fire Department. I am very excited about Depiction and looking forward to getting to know the user community.
Depiction Sample: Monroe, WA Flood Scenario
Posted July 18th, 2008 by CAPT KimEarly feedback from our first users of Depiction Beta 1 indicates that it would be helpful to have some examples of how the software can be used. So I've created a short demonstration video of a sample Depiction showing how severe flooding of a nearby river might impact a local community and what the community might do to possibly reduce that impact. A couple of strategically placed sand bag barriers might just save half the town!
